Rebekah Brooks arrested, updates

Incase you haven't heard, former News International head Rebekah Brooks has been arrested. The following is the liveblog relating to the event. Earlier updates after the jump.

NEW YORK TIMES REPORTS: This is what I've been waiting for. "A police statement did not identify her by name but said a 43-year-old woman had been detained for questioning by officers investigating both the phone-hacking scandal and payments made to corrupt police officers. A News International official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Ms. Brooks had been arrested."

UPDATE II: Much of the speculation now surrounds the possibility that Brooks might not appear, as expected, before MPs on Tuesday. Just a couple of minutes ago, the Times' Jim Roberts tweeted, "John Whittingdale says he doesn't know if Rebekah Brooks will still appear before MPs on Tuesday." Sorry about all of the Twitter sourcing, but it's kind of the only source we've got right now, aside from news sites. "News Int sources say they had no inkling Rebekah Brooks would be arrested when discussing her resignation last week," the New York Times' Jim Roberts tweets. Rebekah Brooks arrest marks tenth by Scotland Yard in the scandal, the BBC is reporting.

UPDATE; IT'S CONFIRMED: @BreakingNews tweets, "ITN sources confirm that 43-yr-old woman arrested in hacking investigation is Rebekah Brooks, former top News Int'l exec." There you go, folks.

BROOKS ARRESTED: Sky News reports: "The 43-year-old went to a London police station by appointment and is being held on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and corruption allegations. Operation Weeting has been launched to investigate claims that newspaper journalists hacked into the phones of high-profile figures and even victims of crime." It should be noted at this stage that it hasn't been officially disclosed, although a number of top-level media organisations, including Sky News and the BBC, are reporting it as Rebekah Brooks. "A 43-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with an investigation into phone hacking and bribery. The woman, who has not been named, was arrested by appointment by Operation Weeting police at a London police station. She remains in custody, Met Police said." -- see the full report, from the BBC.
