Originally designed as a font designed to give a 'friendly feel' to the help text of a Microsoft program, the much-reviled
Comic Sans typeface – designed in 1994 by Vincent Connare – has reportedly sparked a widely-supported campaign to ban it. The main people behind the movement, according to
this article in the Boston Globe by Erin McKean, have described using the font as akin to “showing up for a black tie event in a clown costume.” I'm inclined to agree. Although my feelings on Comic Sans fall short of wishing to ban it, it should be said that its use ought to be discouraged. The 'clown costume' comparison is both appropriate and amusing, in a way Comic Sans will never be.
