Joe Klein makes a similar point regarding Gingrich:

his claim that he wants to run an American campaign in the fall suggests what? That the President will run an unAmerican campaign? This “American” thing both Gingrich and Romney are using is pretty despicable. Romney is doing unAmerican lite: He loves America; Obama favors a “European” model. This is utter nonsense: Obama has favored a Romney Republican model on health care and a Clinton model on taxes. The Republican attempts to portray him as some sort of radical–with the racial/religious dog whistles of Black/Muslim attached–is about the ugliest thing I’ve seen in ten presidential campaigns. It can’t work in this country, can it?
